The thing I most frequently get questions about have to do with raising puppies. People get their puppies home and begin to realize how hard it is to get the well behaved dog we are all looking for. Biggest things asked are how to stop biting, how to stop leash pulling, how to stop inappropriate chewing and the the answer is always a simple one. We must discipline the puppy just as mother dog would. I believe everyone gets too scared of the word discipline and believes it's a abusive connotation and it's far from. We took an infant animal from it's mother who normally would be teaching it's baby how not to bite and get into things and her method is rolling a pup or biting she is very firm. For some reason we are scared to do the same and as a result we have bad habits develop and get an uncontrollable dog. We stopped the puppies mother from raising the baby and now it is our job to guide the baby in right direction of proper behavior. The puppy bites us we need to yelp in a way that startles the puppy to stop or tap that nose. Trust me it won't cause hand shy or traumatized puppy it's a lot less than what mom dog would have done. Your puppy starts getting into stuff keep a rolled up bath towel secured on either end with a rubberband to use as a bonker throw it towards pup on the ground to startle puppy to stop what it's doing. The puppy is going to learn very fast what yes and no means and will not repeat bad behaviors. Spend a ton of time rewarding good behaviors and you will be on your way to a controlled dog. We have to stop letting our dogs walk all over us and we can begin to enjoy our dogs and prevent more animals in shelters.
